This sentiment fell into a deeper perspective after taking part in a Native Sun Ceremony. My friends stood in a circle of harmony as they welcomed the new day…this wasn’t new for them, it had been passed down from generation to generation. It wasn’t new to me either however, I had found that lately I had taken it for granted and forgotten what I had been taught. Realizing my excuses were everything from my life being too busy, too stressful or just not having enough time. I knew I had to change my perspective so that I can enjoy the delight of greeting another day.

At the circle, there was no judgment or expectation of what the day was or will be. Instead there was a gentle acceptance that today was another day to celebrate life. It was a moment to remember to be thankful for the earth we live on, the sustenance she provides, for the sun and the moon and the cycles they influence, for the knowledge of our brothers and sisters, the two the four legged, feathered and the finned, the wisdom of our ancestors who stood among the stars and the quiet whispers of our hearts as we allowed ourselves to become one with the acceptance that today was a new day. So we let go of the pains of yesterday and the fears of tomorrow as we stood present in the moment.

What I found interesting in honoring the new day we could also set our intention, as if the slate was clean. We could choose what direction we wanted to walk today, for tomorrow it maybe different.

I reflected upon how this experience changed my life. My Mom was right; everyday is a new day… a chance to learn something new, to make something right, to make a small change for the good. By starting with myself I realized I can encourage small changes in my life. I saw these changes as a pebble thrown into a lake causing ripples upon ripples in the sea of life as it spread out before me. It reminded me to feed my heart, my soul, my passion, to let go of pain, regret and hurt. Starting the day this way made me reflective of who I am; who I have in my life; and that my life was and my choices were truly my own making.. No one controls us unless we let them. The choice is ours. You make each day your own when you awake…you can choose to live in misery and hate or find the path of happiness and love. Respect yourself and others, find peace in where you are, yet if you are unhappy or unsure, find the strength and courage to take small steps to change. You’re in control of all you do and how you see the moment. But most importantly this experience taught me to be thankful for the sun that greeted me with a chance to say “I am alive and I have another day to make a difference”.

This is what I learned upon greeting a new day…what would celebrating life and greeting a new day mean to you?

This post was written by Suzan Lupejkis
Can you hear your heart beat or the whisper of your breath? Do you welcome silence and all the awareness it brings? Can you embrace the silence and sit in stillness as the mystery of life is revealed? If not, would you like to?

Today’s fast paced life does not allow easy access to peacefulness and serenity. Finding a quiet moment is a challenge and in itself becomes another task to be added to the ever growing list of things we should be doing. Yet silence is the doorway to mindful moments where you can seek Silence balance, tranquility and bliss. Silence is a place where you can connect to the inner stillness, a sacred place where you can renew your spirit, rejuvenate your body and uncover your true self. By welcoming silence into our life we develop a very important practice that allows us to sustain health and wellness.

Welcoming silence opens a doorway to a deeper awareness. It has been said that in the quiet moments you can find a place where you can connect to God, Spirit, the Creator, Divine or your own innate life force which in turn, will allow you to experience a greater knowing that we are connected to everyone and everything.

When we take time to sit in silence, we give our body, mind and spirit a break from the constant chatter and activity that surrounds us. Silence is not something we consciously notice in our lives, as a matter of fact, we are so conditioned to be stimulated that when a chance for quiet moment happens we will often unconsciously fill it with sound or activity. Any free time is filled with making phone calls or texting, turning on a radio or TV, surfing the internet, grabbing a book or magazine or finding yet another thing to entertain our mind. Our days and nights seem to be filled with sounds and images, all of which bombard our nervous system. Yet opportunities to experience silence do arise, so next time you find a quiet moment see if you can embrace the moment rather than taking the temptation to fill that space with sound and images. Welcome the silence as you embrace the stillness and enjoy the opportunity to notice your body, your needs, or habits. Resist the temptation to be stimulated by sounds and images. Instead allow yourself the moment to listen to your own inner whisperers or the natural sounds around you, try to hear the birds or your heart…enjoy the peace as you welcome silence into your life.
